BMW is one of the best known manufacturers in the World so you would expect them to build very impressive cars. For the most part this is true, especially with their four door sedans which are among the fastest in the World. However, they don’t have any super-car on the market which is a bit unusual considering that most other manufacturers do. In order to change that, a new car is in the works with the 2017 BMW M9 Concept which has been rumored ever since the start of 2015. This car would make use of the same carbon fiber chassis as the i8 but instead of the hybrid powertrain it would get a more impressive petrol engine.

The price or the release date are still unknown but considering the market BMW wants to tackle, we expect the 2017 BMW M9 to cost around $150,000 for a base model and up to $250,000 for a higher performance version, similar to what Audi is doing with the R8. The release date will likely be in 2017 for the concept while the production model will follow right after.

In terms of design, BMW will not recycle the look of the i8 but they will offer something a bit more impressive than that. The car will feature a full carbon fiber shell which will make it the only super-car to offer such a feature. This should allow them to design a more intricate design with more aggressive features than the i8. Also, this new design of the body will have to withstand much higher forces due to the more powerful powertrain installed in the car.

Interior

Inside the cabin the futuristic interior of the i8 will not be used. Instead, the 2017 BMW M9 is actually expected to get something a bit more minimalistic with a more refined design and also more premium materials. Carbon fiber inserts and Alcantara leather will be found even on the base model.

Under the rear deck of the 2017 BMW M9 we are likely going to find the first mid-engined inline 6 since the original M1. We still don’t know the actual displacement of the car but it seems that it will likely be between 3 and 3.6 liters and unlike the M3 which only has a single turbocharger, the M9 will feature twin-turbochargers. This should be enough to offer around 500 to 550 horsepower and up to 550 lb-ft of torque which are going to be routed to the rear wheels via a 7 speed dual-clutch gearbox. The higher end model will likely be a hybrid which will use the same petrol engine as well as one or two electric motors that will be enough to get the output of the car to more than 800 horsepower!

The i3 is one of the more interesting cars BMW currently sells because it is a fully modular electric vehicle which is not only affordable, but it can also be ordered with a range extender which will allow anyone to use it just like any other petrol powered vehicle. Being released back in 2013, the car already received a small update quite recently at the LA Auto Show, update which improved its powertrain, it offered a few new trim levels as well as a new price. The car sells better than ever and the special edition models are there to increase its appeal rather than to boost its sales.

One of these new models which have been released in Los Angeles is the Shadow Sport limited edition which will only be built in 50 units and as far as we know, it has already been sold out by BMW in the first day of its announcement. The price for the i3 will not change for the usual model but the Shadow Sport will start at roughly $47,000 and it will only be available in the United States. BMW also said that they may apply an extra $5,000 for this model in order to deliver it faster than the first half of 2016 while the usual model will likely be delivered in the second half of next year.

Exterior Design

The design of the new 2016 BMW i3 did not change all that much over that of the ongoing model. The front end remained unchanged but the car could receive a new set of wheels for the base version. Most changes come with the Shadow Sport edition which comes in an all new full black paint, 19 inch unique wheels which will be painted in either black or deep silver as well as a blue painted front grille.

The interior on the other hand received a bit more care and even that of the base model has been upgraded with slightly better seats as well as new materials on the higher end models. The Shadow Sport model on the other hand will not only get a differently colored upholstery but it will also allow its 50 buyers to customized the dashboard as well as the stitching on the seats. Unfortunately, the car will come similarly equipped to a top end version of the usual one which is a bit of a shame because we expected it to come with at least a differently customized infotainment system.

Engine wise, the new 2016 BMW i3 remained similar to the ongoing model and it will still be available as either an electric only model or with a range extender fitted to it. The electric motor remains unchanged for both models and it is a compact 168 horsepower electric unit which will power the rear wheels via a single speed transmission. This will allow the car to get to 60 MPH in around 7 seconds and get to a limited top speed of 93 MPH which is not all that great but it should be more than enough considering it is intended to be a city car.

The range extender consists out of a small 2 cylinder 647cc petrol engine which is fueled by a 9 liters fuel tank. This will further extend the range of the car to a total of 150 miles of even more than that if the driver will be able to drive consistently. The Shadow Sport model on the other hand comes with a differently tuned suspension system which should allow the car to be better to drive on tight roads without having to compromise on the comfort of its passengers. The petrol engine has also been tuned in order to provide more power when the driver needs it.

2015 BMW X6 Price And Changes

The 2015 BMW X6 is one of those cars that make you hate it or love it. If you are in the first category then you most likely think that the X5 is a much better car that will offer you pretty much the same thing as the X6 at a lower price without looking silly. However, if you love it, the X6 makes a lot of sense because it is a car in a class of its own that will most likely be populated in a couple of month with models from Audi and Lamborghini.

The newer X6 will be released in a couple of months, most likely at the end of 2014 and its base price will start at nearly 70.000 dollars which is just the price of the older model. The differences over the previous generation will mean a slightly different exterior, a better interior and also a new set of engines which should please anyone.

Starting with the engines, the car will feature two smaller engines as well as a top of the range one. The base car will come with a 300 horsepower and 340 lb-ft of torque inline 6 which has been carried over from the previous generation. This engine is smooth and it is quite potent, being able to get the car to a maximum top speed of 140 MPH with ease. The other option is a 3 liter inline 6 diesel that is available in two power options. The first one is a 306 horsepower and 443 lb-ft of torque while the M50d will offer you 380 horsepower and up to 546 lb-ft of torque which is nearly as much as the most powerful engine in the range.

The top of the line engine will be a 4.4 liter twin turbocharged V8 with more than 450 horsepower and up to 480 lb-ft of torque which is going to be available on the X6 50i. The X6M will most likely get the same petrol engine but with at least 650 horsepower and more than 600 lb-ft of torque. The actual release date of this engine hasn’t been announced yet but it is going to surface at the end of this year.

Changes

The outside of the 2015 BMW X6 won’t look that much different than that of the previous generation but there will be a couple of changes. Firstly, the entire front of the car will get redesigned in order to better fit BMW’s design scheme while the back of the car will receive a new bumper with a new exhaust system that is also going to include a diffuser. This has the role of improving the sound of the car as well as keeping it glued to the road in any situation.

The Bavarian Motor Works celebrates its 100 in 2016, and the automotive giant is expected to mark the occasion with the 2016 BMW i9 Hybrid. Little is known at this point, but we expect the four-door vehicle to be built on an i8-style chassis. There’s speculation that, since it’s an odd number, this car may be a luxury high-performance car. Think chauffeur-driven rich people in China (the car is supposed to premier at the Beijing Auto Show in April, 2015). Others think that the 2016 BMW i9 Hybrid may be sporty like the i8, a sedan/sports car like the Jaguar XJ or reminiscent of the 9 Series GT Concept. At this early date, no one knows for sure.

BMW has been mum about the details, but that doesn’t prevent us from speculating about them anyway.

The i8, BMW’s highest-priced model, begins at about USD 135,700. Expect the i9 to be released in limited quantities and sell for considerably higher: perhaps USD 175,000.

BMW’s release dates have been all over the calendar in the past few years, but assuming the car is at the April auto show, expect a an early summer release in 2015.

Performance

According to one report, the 2016 BMW i9 hybrid will have substantially more power than the 3-cyl, 357-hp, 1.5-l i8. That may mean a 6-cyl, 425-hp, 3.0-l engine, along with an upgraded 150-hp electric motor. How such an engine will fit on the i8 chassis is anyone’s guess. That motor would translate to 0-60 in about 4.0 seconds, and a top speed of about 155-mph.

Electric cars are becoming more and more sophisticated with every model year. The i8 has a 6.0-kWh lithium-ion battery, so the 2016 BMW i9 Hybrid will probably have something even bigger. The i9 may have a smart engine which automatically converts from gasoline to electricity depending on the vehicle’s speed, sort of like a very advanced automatic transmission.

Body

The i9 should have a very lightweight construction, mostly aluminum and carbon fibers, to optimize the engine’s performance. That may allow engineers to cheat a bit, and install a smaller engine that still performs as advertised.

Comparable Cars

Porsche 918 Spyder, Ferrari LaFerrari, McLaren P1, Mercedes AMG GT and other high-performance hybrids. If you’re willing and able to drop 200k on a car, you want something really nice.

Whatever it looks like and runs like, the 2016 BMW i9 Hybrid will likely be the last of the “i” series, as Hyundai already owns the “i10” moniker. Stay tuned for more details as they become available.

If there is one company in the luxury car market, that is always pushing the boundaries whilst keeping its vehicles affordable to the largest portion of the population possible, it is BMW. The company’s innovations and quality vehicle designs are too numerous to recount but it looks like they are set to do it all over again with the 2015 BMW i8.

On paper the car looks amazing. The company is claiming that it is the first car in its class to offer all of the speed of a sports car with the fuel consumption of a compact and it’s a boast that the company backs up with an astonishing 100km/2.1 litres statistic that would make any but the most efficient compacts stand up and take notice.

All of this is apparently gained without sacrificing any of that trademark performance, with the vehicle containing a 231 brake horse power electric motor, supported by a traditional combustion engine, which will ensure the little vehicle can really shift. Even better is the option to run the car purely on electricity rather than petrol whilst still allowing for an astonishing top speed of 120km/hr. With the help of the engine, this is upped to an astonishing 250km/hr, which is sure to impress anybody who gets behind the wheel.

The car sports a 1.5 litre turbo charged, 3 cylinder petrol engine that has been specifically manufactured by the company for vehicles of its class, once again showing off the innovative qualities that BMW has become world renowned for. Combining this engine with the EfficientDynamics strategy that the company is currently extolling is sure to make it an attractive proposition for those who are concerned about their CO2 emissions as well.

Speaking of this new strategy and, as previously mentioned, the BMW i8 will also be just as capable of running on electricity as it is on petrol. With the simple push of a button the driver can activate the system, which allows for 100% electric fuelling up to a range of 37km before taking a little support from the combustion engine to help hit those higher speeds and longer distances. It’s a brave new step from the company and one has to wonder just how long it will be before they develop technology advanced enough to ensure top class performance from an electric only vehicle.

Releasing very soon, at a price point of £100,000, the car looks like it will be perfect for those who want an economic drive with a little bit of style.
