2015 Volvo S60

2015 Volvo S60

The 2015 Volvo S60 promises to be the German saloon killer. Why? Well, to put it simply, it will offer pretty much anything the German competitors can offer at a better price with a grain of lunacy. This isn’t a bad thing especially when considering the car has engine that range from a tiny 1.6 that offer incredible fuel consumption up to a twi turbo inline 6 that can compete with the most powerful saloons on the market.

The only thing that the S60 misses is probably a better advertising campaign. The new 2015 model is going to be just an improved version of the current one rather than a whole new car. This means that it will offer even better fuel consumption, better performance and a more mature interior, all at a very good price.

The base model of the car will be around 31.000$ which put it in class with the BMW 3 Series. For the price you will get most of the things you need like climate control, parking sensors as well as a navigation system that also doubles as the infotainment center. The only drawback for the base model is the fact that it doesn’t offer leather for the upholstery as standard. Also, until the car will be released in December 2014, there might be a few changes that will take place.

Engine wise, the S60 will come as standard in the US with a 2 liter turbocharged petrol engine that is good for around 200 horsepower and 220 lb-ft of torque. This is also the most fuel efficient of them all at around 27 MPG on average. Further down the range there is available another 2 liter engine but this time it offers up to 245 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. The most powerful though will be the old 3 liter inline 6 that will offer up to 325 horsepower and 350 lb-ft of torque. This is also the first year when a Polestar version will be available. This will offer an even more tweaked version of the 3 liter engine with 350 horsepower and 370 lb-ft of torque.

The base model comes as standard with front wheel drive and a 6 speed manual while the other versions except the Polestar come with front wheel drive and a 6 speed automatic as standard. The Polestar on the other hand comes with four wheel drive and a special 6 speed manual transmission that will offer a great experience.

The exterior will be quite similar to that of the current generation. The only major change will be the Polestar which will feature a brand new body-kit to help the car at high speeds and a new set of 18 inch wheels that will be standard on this model.

2015 Volvo XC90

2015 Volvo XC90

The XC90 is one of the most loved SUVs by family people all over the World. It managed to achieve all that thanks to great safety features, good looks and well designed engines which not only were fuel efficient but they also were powerful enough for any needs. The 2015 Volvo XC90 is going to be a well deserved refresh that will most likely use an all new platform, new engine options as well as a more up to date styling which should please all its fans.

Volvo XC90

Review

This styling is going to be using straight lines and no curves for the big SUV, so it will look a lot more premium than before. The wheels of the car will now be 18 to 20 inches in diameter and all of them will be available with low rolling resistance tires. Its price for the base model should be no higher than 40 thousand dollars while the release date is set to be at the end of this year.

Model wise, the XC90 will be available in a few trims. Firstly, there will be the base D4 and T4 with the addition of T5, 6 and D5 as well as a new plug in hybrid which will be using the PHEV designation. All of these models will include in their standard form leather upholstery, wood, aluminum or carbon fiber trimmings as well as a navigation system. Further options should include better seats, adjustable rear bench as well as an infotainment system for all of its occupants.

Its engines will range greatly from a 2 liter petrol up to a new inline 6 from the S60. The base engine will be a 2 liter petrol or a 2 liter diesel in the T4 or D4 respectively. The power ratings for these two will start at 190 horsepower for the D4 and 185 for the T4. Moving further up the range there will be a 2 liter twin turbo diesel with 225 horsepower and up to 400 lb-ft of torque which should suffice for most people. For the petrol powered cars, the T5 and T6 will use 2 liter turbocharged petrol engine with an output starting at 254 up to 320 horsepower and a maximum torque of nearly 310 lb-ft of torque.

All of these engines will be available solely with all wheel drive and an eight speed automatic gearbox which is new in Volvo’s range of cars. The unit is quiet, comfortable to use and changes gears without a glitch.

The plug in electric of the 2015 Volvo XC90 on the other hand uses a 2 liter petrol engine and two electric motors for the rear axle for a total combined power of around 220 horsepower. Thanks to a set of batteries and the capability of charging from a home plug, the car is able to go up to 25 miles on electricity which with the help of the petrol engine can be further extended up to 500 miles. In theory, the car should be capable of delivering 50 miles per gallon with ease.

2016 Volvo S60 Inscription

Since it has been sold to Geely, Volvo started to grow more and more so it is now a Global brand which is in fact just as good as some premium manufacturers out there. Thanks to that, most of their models feature top of the line protection in case of accidents, great comfort as well as good looks which don’t stand out that much. The S60 is their premium sedan which has been sold in the US for quite some time. However, this is the first year when a Chinese made S60 or for that matter, a Chinese-made car by a Global manufacturer is going to be sold in the US.

Price and Release Date

The 2016 Volvo S60 Inscription is the first of its kind, a car built by Volvo in China which is going to be sold in the US for a premium price. More likely, the car is going to start at just under $40,000 for the base model and go up to around $45,000 for the premium version. The release date has been set at the start of June 2015 and it will only be sold in a limited number.

2016 Volvo S60 side

While the S60 has been sold for a while in the US, the Inscription is the long wheelbase version of the car which has been available on the Chinese market for quite some time. Volvo decided to sell it in the US as well because the US customers needed a car with more rear room than the average sedan at an affordable price and there was simply no car to offer that. The trend is actually quite likely going to catch on, so more and more manufacturers are expected to do the same thing.

engine

Under the hood of the 2016 Volvo S60 Inscription there are two different engines available. The base is a 2 liter turbocharged inline 4, good for 240 horsepower which is offered with front or all wheel drive. The option comes in the form of a 5 cylinder 2.5 liter engine with 250 horsepower. While it may not seem like a big boost in power, this engine makes more than 290 lb-ft of torque while the smaller version only has around 230 lb-ft of it. Thanks to that, it can provide better acceleration as well as a smoother ride. Unlike the inline 4 engine though, the 5 cylinder model only comes with all wheel drive. The performance is quite good with a 0 to 60 MPH time of less than 7 seconds and a top speed of around 135 MPH. The only drawback has to be the fuel consumption which isn’t as good as some other turbocharged sedans, with an expected 27 MPG on average for the smaller engine.

On the interior, the car is very much an S60 and not much else. However, the equipment level is identical to that of a premium model rather than a base one, so it comes as standard with a sunroof, dual-zone automatic climate control, leather upholstery with electric front and rear seats, a premium audio system as well as a satellite navigation unit. The premium version adds a HarmanKardon audio system, better rear seats as well as rear LCD screens for the infotainment center. In terms of space, the front seats offer the same comfort as the base S60 but in the rear there are 2.6 inches of extra legroom as well as bigger and more comfortable seats.

Exterior

The outside of the 2016 Volvo S60 Inscription on the other hand is very similar to the usual model. In fact, the only real noticeable change are the rear doors which are a bit longer and the new 19 inch wheels which should be only available on this particular model.
