How to Use Google Translate

Hello and welcome to our tutorial about how to use Google Translate. Google Translate is a free online tool which lets you translate text from one language to another. It currently supports 80 languages. It can translate sentences, paragraphs and even entire web pages. It is an extremely useful device if you want to access information that is in a language you cannot understand.

Here is a article with more info of Google Translate Google Translate

How does Google Translate work?

Basically, when you type in a word or sentence, Google Translate automatically scans through millions of documents to make an intelligent decision about which translation is most suitable for you. This process is known as “statistical machine translation.” Since the translation is machine generated, it might not be perfect. But you can help improve the translation by clicking the “improve this translation” option. This allows you to select among multiple translations which one is the best for you.

Steps to use Google Translate:

  • Go to the Google Homepage.

  • Type Google Translate in the search bar. Alternatively, you can also type google.com in your browser’s menu bar.

  • Open the Google Translate link.

  • Type in the text in the left hand box. Click the drop down menu above the box to select the language you want to translate from.

  • In case you aren’t sure of the language you want to translate from, just type in the text and Google will detect the language for you.

  • The right hand box is the target language box where the translated text appears. Select the language you want to translate the text to from the options above the right hand box. The automatic language of translation is English.

In case you’re using a non Roman script,

  • Select the language you want to translate from.

  • You will see a tiny option underneath which will give you a virtual keyboard with the script.

  • In case you want to translate to a non Roman script, just select the language you want to translate to and watch the translated script in the right hand box. The translated text is also available in Roman script underneath, with the phonetic emphases.

  • You can also hear the text with appropriate pronunciations, by clicking the audio ( ) button.

Options on Google Translate

Google Translate lets you do many things with the translated text. When you type in one particular word or a small phrase, a long list of alternate translations will be available. Say you are translating from English to German; Google Translate will give you a dictionary of German words which can be used for the English word. Each German word in the dictionary will also have a list of English words which can be used for the German word. This type of reverse translation is very useful.
