Kojima to Showcase ‘Metal Gear Online’ Next Week

Metal Gear Solid Online Reveal Game Awards

Although Geoff Keighley’s annual video game awards will no longer carry the Spike name or be broadcast live on television, the show still lives on in spirit as The Game Awards. This year’s show will take place in Las Vegas on December 5th and will once again feature the typical awards display alongside some exciting new game and gameplay reveals.

So far, though, The Game Awards powers that be have kept their allotment of world premieres a secret. We expect big things from the show, as past event’s have unveiled projects like The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and the highly anticipated indie No Man’s Sky, but without so much as a peep from publishers it’s hard to predict what will show up. It’s also worth mentioning that because the show has left cable it might not have as much clout.

Either way, Keighley has confirmed one full reveal in the form of Metal Gear Online, which will make its official debut at the show. Not only that, Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima will be on site to give the footage a proper unveiling.

We know that Metal Gear Online is the multiplayer component for next year’s Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain, but Kojima and Konami have kept details to a minimum. Thus far the promotional focus has been on story and gameplay for MGS 5, with talk of how this entry factors into the larger timeline and how stealth action has evolved. Kojima Productions have teased multiplayer with talk of the Mother Base mechanic, but Metal Gear Online is likely to be something a little more competitive.

Some will remember Metal Gear Online as the multiplayer wing of both Metal Gear Solids 3 and 4, offering a handful of modes (team deathmatch, team capture, team stealth) for 16-player competitive action. Konami also offered Metal Gear Online as a standalone product for the Japanese market, who apparently couldn’t get enough. However, nothing lasts forever and the service was put to rest in 2012.

Now it appears Kojima is ready to bring Metal Gear Online back, hopefully with some new tricks up its sleeve. The series’ gameplay has certainly changed a lot from MGS 3 to now – for a taste make sure to check out Ground Zeroes – so it will be interesting to see what the developers do to evolve the competitive multiplayer experience as well.

What would you like to see from the Metal Gear Online footage? Are there any other games you hope show up at The Game Awards?

The Game Awards stream live December 5, 2014 at 6pm EST.
