How to Use Google Images

Hello and welcome to our tutorial about how to use Google Images. There will be two parts to the tutorial. The first will tell you how to do the normal search, when you search for an image by typing in the related words in the search bar. The second will teach you Google’s latest feature, which is the reverse image search. Using this, you can upload an image to Google Images and then search for related images on the web.

First, let’s take the normal search by word. Here’s what you have to do to search images by word.

  • Go to Google Homepage and click the Images option at the top right hand corner.

  • On Google Images, type in words the subject of the images. For example, if you want to see images of a beach in Maldives, type Top 10 Beaches in Maldives, or something.

  • In order to search for moving pictures or gifs, type the subject and then write gif beside it.

  • You can filter you search by using the Search Tools option. Search Tools allows you to filter your search based on color, size, type, time of uploading and usage rights.

  • You also have the safe and private search options to modify your search. These allow you to keep to those sites which have safe user ratings, and also allow you to select whether you want to see public/private results.

  • For Advanced Search, go to the search settings option. This will allow you to fine pick your search until you hit the right find. Search by history, webpage, aspect ratio, file type; basically everything that you can possibly want.

  • Once you’ve got the image that you want, click on it to open in enlarged view. You can click on the link provided beside the image to go to the webpage. Google Images also provides you with a lot of related images you can choose from.

How does the reverse image search work?

You can now use the reverse search option on Google Images to find related images of the one you’ve uploaded. This will only work if the same or similar images are present in other places around the web, so don’t try this search with the pictures of your family, or whatever.

  • Go to Google Images and click the tiny camera shaped icon right beside the search bar.

  • You will get a list of options. You can either drag or drop the image you want, or copy and paste the image URL or browse and upload from your computer.

  • On uploading the image, Google takes you to a webpage with all the related images and their details. Your image is also searched by the file name, so change the name of your file to something related to the image. For example, if you have uploaded a picture of yellow poppies to search for related images of yellow poppies, make sure the file is called yellow poppies and not 1028773_images. You get the idea.
