Destiny leads September’s videogame sales, Smash Bros. for 3DS selling strong

Bungie’s Destiny is currently the most-played PS4 game by a factor of 5-times total active gameplay hours than its unnamed runner-up, Sony announced.

Based on internal estimates from Activision, PlayStation 4 is the console of choice for Destiny players, and was the top pre-order title and day-one sales title on the PlayStation Store leading up to and on its September 9 launch. Sony did not, however, provide any hard figures.

Meanwhile, in Nintendo Land, Super Smash Bros. for 3DS moved 705,000 units in two days and helped sell over 140,000 3DS systems in September leading up to its October 3 launch, according to NPD data. On Wii U, Nintendo reports that Hyrule Warriors sold over 190,000 since its September 26 launch, while Mario Kart 8 sold another 60,000 in September, its fifth month on the market. No word on exact hardware sale figures, though Nintendo says the Wii U’s sales increased nearly 50 percent in September over August’s numbers.

Microsoft has yet to make any announcements pertaining to Xbox One and Xbox 360 sales in September based on NPD data.

As for the top ten best-selling video games in September, according to the NPD Group, they’re as follows:

1. Destiny

2. Madden NFL 15

3. FIFA 15

4. Super Smash Bros. for 3DS

5. Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor

6. NHL 15
