Gmail Forwarding and POP/IMAP

POP and IMAP allow you to download messages from Gmail’s servers into your computer to access your mail with other programs even when you are not connected to the Internet.

IMAP provides a method to access your mail from multiple devices and ensures that the new email is accessible from any device anytime.

Gmail also lets users forward incoming mail to another email address.

• Click on the gear icon then select Settings.


• Click the Forwarding and POP/IMAP tab.


• Add forwarding address(add new forwarding address) -> Next Proceed


• A message will appear: “A confirmation code has been sent to verify permission.”


• Once the confirmation comes in, copy and paste it on the text box and click “Verify”.

Select the action that you’d like your message to take. Then “Forward a copy of incoming mail to (email address)” and select from the dropdown menu;

• Keep Gmail’s copy in the Inbox,


• Mark Gmail’s copy as read, archive Gmail’s copy


• Delete Gmail’s copy”.

IMAP Access

Auto-Expunge On – when you mark a message and delete it, Gmail is going to completely remove it from your account.

You can set this up in a section that says “When a message is marked and expunged from the last visible IMAP folder:” you will have three different choices;

• Archive the message,


• Move the message to the Trash or


• Immediately delete the message forever.

It will not be active unless you turn Auto-Expunge on.

You can also select the “Folder Size Limits” that you prefer. You have two choices;

• Do not limit the number of messages in an IMAP folder (default)


• Limit IMAP folders to contain no more than this many messages (select a number from the drop down menu)

Don’t forget to always hit the “Save Changes” button after you’re done editing the settings.
