What Call of Duty has in giant set pieces and explosions, Sniper: Ghost Warrior has in stealth. Developed and published by CI Games, the Sniper: Ghost Warrior franchise is all about the quiet kill, featuring sniper shots from long-range and pistol and knife kills at close quarters.
Compared to Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare‘s speedy exo suits, Battlefield‘s focus on building destruction and even the Sniper Elite franchise (which has plenty of stealth but its biggest draw is its gory X-Ray kills), Sniper: Ghost Warrior probably seems subdued. And, it’s this take on war that has made the franchise one one of the most popular titles in the CI Games roster, with over 5.5 million copies sold.
Those figures and that fill for a gap in the market is why CI Games has now announced Sniper: Ghost Warrior 3. This next game in the sniping series is being “created from the ground up.” According to the team behind the game, Sniper: Ghost Warrior 3 is their very first AAA development effort and CI Games CEO Marek Tyminski adds that they are “investing a significant amount of effort into the third installment.” The previous two games received average review scores and so this will be a welcome announcement for fans.
To achieve this triple A vision, CI Games will be working with Steve Hart, former senior producer of Sniper Elite V2, and combat veteran and former Marine Paul B.Robinson. Robinson has over 20 years of video game development experience and while it’s unclear as to what games he’s worked, his combat chops will no doubt be a valuable asset to Sniper: Ghost Warrior 3‘s development.
As for the plot of the title, CI Games revealed the following:
Set in a modern day conflict based in Eastern Europe, players will be thrust into the role of a sniper caught between three warring factions, played out in a realistic and immersive environment.
While that might be a little uncomfortable for people given that conflict is still happening in Eastern Europe at the moment (between three factions, no less), CI Games is based in Poland and could have a good grasp of the political tensions in the area. What they add in politics and story, Robinson can help fill in with combat knowledge.
We also have a a good idea of gameplay. Although Sniper: Ghost Warrior 3 is being built from scratch it will still offer the “non-linear, sandbox-style gameplay on large open-ended maps” that fans are used to and it will also “give players the flexibility to play and replay the missions in a number of different ways.”
CI Games also states that the game will “Dig deep into the Ghost Warrior DNA.” That might be a little off-putting for some who haven’t played either of the other Ghost Warrior games but the team also assures us that Sniper: Ghost Warrior 3 will offer “intriguing challenges for tactically-minded gamers, while still remaining accessible to first-person shooter fans.”.
Now that the game is coming to current gen (Ghost Warrior 2 was only released on PS3 and Xbox 360) it sounds like it could give shooter fans a new franchise to shoot their way through, especially after growing tired of Call of Duty or left feeling disappointed by Battlefield 4.
Sniper: Ghost Warrior 3 will be released in 2016 on PC, PS4 and Xbox One.
