‘Lords of the Fallen 2′ Is In Development

Fans of this year’s Dark Souls-esque Lords of the Fallen can take heart – a sequel is already in production.

The game’s executive producer Tomasz Gop stated today that Lords of the Fallen 2 is indeed in development. No platforms have been officially announced, but PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC seem like a safe bet. Unless, of course, Microsoft decides to open its wallet again to compete with the PS4 exclusive Bloodborne

Gop confirmed the news in an email to Eurogamer. “We’re now working on vision and concepts for Lords 2,” he said, though he declined to give further details. The first Lords of the Fallen received mostly positive reviews (here’s our Lords of the Fallen review) so a sequel is welcome.

Lords of the Fallen released in October and the comparisons to Dark Souls have come largely from the game’s intense combat, although it’s arguably not as smash-the-controller difficult. Lords intentionally makes players’ lives a little easier by offering much more frequent save points so that not much progress is lost when the game inevitably cuts them down.

The third-person action RPG puts players in the role of Harkyn, a convicted criminal whose crimes are visible right on his face, in the form of runes. The world’s leaders are attempting to purge all evil, which just might mean the permanent end of Harkyn. But then those pesky old Gods show up and attack the human realm, freeing Harkyn from prison, because…. well, because it’s a video game.

Harkyn sets out to redeem himself and save the world, eventually traveling to Rhogar, a demon-infested dimension. So yes, the plot as well as the gameplay is almost painfully similar to Dark Souls. Some gamers started throwing around the word “clone” even back when the title was in development, but the fact that the game has shipped more than 700,000 units and at last count sold more than 200,000 seems to imply that Lords has found its own following.

Lords of the Fallen fans hankering for additional content won’t have to wait for the sequel. CI Games announced in November that DLC called Ancient Labyrinth is on the way. The expansion will feature a new boss, new location and more focus on puzzle solving and exploration.

Lords of the Fallen is available now for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Lords of the Fallen 2 is now officially in development, most likely for the same platforms.
