The Street Fighter V news continues, with Capcom using the momentum from the game’s leak and announcement to keep the PS4 bound title in the spotlight. After officially revealing the game at the PlayStation Experience, then showing the first live match at Capcom Cup, the developer has now taken to revealing a little more about the development behind the game. Specifically, the engine it’ll be utilizing this time around.
In addition to their partnership with Sony, Capcom is also teaming up with Epic Games to develop Street Fighter V using Unreal Engine 4. Regardless of how the game will play or function, expect it to look good, especially if past trailers and videos are anything to go by.
Capcom producer Bochan Kim explains that Unreal Engine 4 will help the studio take their “beloved fighting game franchise and bring it to our fans in the best way possible.” Naturally, SFV is a ways off, thereby giving fans of the series ample time to voice their opinions, concerns and requests. Territory Manager of Epic Games Japan Taka Kawasaki expressed pride in the fact that the game will run on UE4:
“I have been a very loyal fan of this historic franchise since the debut of the first Street Fighter in 1987. This opportunity to help the development team using Unreal Engine 4 for the new title is a great honor for Epic, and I couldn’t be more proud.”
Now, with Street Fighter V already treating people to live exhibition matches, one may think that the game is pretty far along in development. That isn’t the case, as it’s actually still in the early stages.
In an interview with Famitsu (via Shoryuken), Capcom’s own Yoshinori Ono revealed that SFV is only 20% of the way through its development. So for those that who issues with the upcoming game, be it the art style or fighting mechanics, it’d be best to keep that 20% in mind. And as said above, there’s plenty of time between now and the game’s release for things to chance. Perhaps drastically.
Shoryuken also notes that, while a definitive release date hasn’t been set, an Amazon listing currently has a placeholder date set in 2016. That could change, of course, but the possibility that SFV may not coming out until 2016 isn’t too radical an idea. Even more so if the game is only a fifth of the way completed.
How soon do you expect Street Fighter V to release? Or would you rather Capcom take as much time as needed before settling on a date? The latter may be the better option, but Capcom’s well known for issuing patches and releasing updates versions months later.
Street Fighter V is set to release on PS4 and PC, complete with support for cross-platform play.
