Call of Duty: Ghosts might have expanded into strange new territory with its Extinction DLC, a four player co-op campaign that pitted players against an alien race, but Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare is returning to more familiar territory with an upcoming zombie mode. As with the main game, one of the major new additions to this mode of play is the fact that zombies will now wear exo suits like the player, giving them an extra boost when they’re on the prowl.
This new breed of advanced zombies is showcased in the first trailer for Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare‘s zombie mode, which is an episode co-op campaign called Exo Zombies. The first chapter of this new campaign will be released as part of the Havoc DLC pack in early 2015, with further episodes released alongside each new DLC pack.
Those who have already completed the Riot map in Exo Survival may have already seen this trailer, which shows the player being rescued from a horde of angry zombies by Gideon, only for Gideon himself to be attacked right at the end by an angry leaping zombie. It’s pretty impressive that the zombies can still operate their boosters despite being undead, but as long as they don’t figure out how to operate the bullet time mechanic it should still be possible to fight them off.
According to a post on Sledgehammer Games’ official blog, the Exo Zombies mode went into development as the team was preparing to launch the main game, and started “playing around with the idea of what happens when zombies were thrown into the mix with exoskeleton gameplay.” The post promises that more information about Exo Zombies will become available over the following weeks.
The various iterations of zombies in Call of Duty games have proved popular over the years and many fans will no doubt be happy to see their rotting friends back again and bouncier than ever. Still, it wouldn’t hurt to change things up a bit; maybe the next Call of Duty game can have a campaign where you fight werewolves.
Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare is out now for PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One. Exo Zombies will be available as part of the Havoc DLC content pack, available in January 2015.
