Despite lacking a massive install base, there was no hiding the fact that Super Smash Bros. for Wii U was going to be a success for Nintendo. Launching alongside a compatible toy line known as amiibo, the franchise’s latest installment quickly found its way into the hands of the masses in North America and sold a record-breaking number of copies for the struggling platform – toppling Mario Kart 8 as the fastest-selling Wii U game in the Unites States as a result.
So, just how popular did the Nintendo-themed beat ‘em up turn out to be? According to Nintendo, the game has sold through 490,000 physical and digital copies in the span of three days in the United States. As was previously mentioned, this makes the latest home console entry in the Super Smash Bros. series the fastest-selling Wii U title in the U.S.A. released thus far and it’s not likely that momentum for the game will be slowing down at any point in the near future.
In an official press release, Nintendo of America’s vice president of Sales and Marketing, Scott Moffitt, elaborated upon what these sales mean for the company and what comes next in a bid to maintain the increased awareness of the Wii U platform heading into the holiday season.
“The Nintendo holiday is off to a great start, but there’s a lot of work left to do and a few more surprises in store for our fans. With great deals coming on Black Friday and Cyber Monday and great content like Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker launching next week, Nintendo will offer shoppers the best combination of fun and value this holiday season.”
Moffitt wasn’t wrong when stating that there are still a number of things to do to ensure that Nintendo has a profitable period in the coming weeks. That said, the combination of Black Friday sales and the release of Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker should help drive continued demand for both the Wii U platform and its current library of software.
When comparing sales numbers to other games, it should be noted that Super Smash Bros. for Wii U has yet to release in Europe or Japan – meaning that many more units are likely to fly off the shelves. After the 3DS version launched to solid sales numbers, however, it’s not surprising to catch wind that the Wii U iteration has done the same.
Hopefully this success leads to more content arriving for the games via DLC in the future (a move that Nintendo currently has no plans to pursue), but fans still have the arrival of the Legendary Pokemon Mewtwo to look forward to in Spring 2015.
