While we have already detailed most of the key components of Destiny‘s The Dark Below DLC expansion, there are some elements that are still in need of further clarification. Unfortunately, without Bungie’s guidance it’s hard to make assumptions about what specific elements’ true intentions or natures are.
For example, gamers have already begun spotting Blade of Crota enemies on both Earth and the Moon, but it’s unclear why they have appeared. Our best guess is that this is one of The Dark Below’s new public events, but that’s just speculation.
As readers can see in the video above, the Blade of Crota enemies only appear at random intervals, much like the public events in Destiny. However, there is no fanfare, objective, or timer present once the Blade of Crota appears, which leads us to believe Bungie is still waiting to flip a switch somewhere.
As far as the gameplay is concerned, the Blade of Crota mechanics seem almost identical to those seen in the ‘Sword of Crota’ mission from the main Destiny campaign. Players can slash both horizontally and vertically, and each swipe lunges them forward almost like a lock-on. It’s a mechanic that was a surprising change of pace for the first person shooter, and one that was criminally underused in the game. That’s all to say, it’s good to see it return here.
If we did have to speculate, thought, we might guess that the new Public Event would involve killing the Blade of Crota enemy within a short period of time. However, given how fast the enemy seems to fall, we’d hope that Bungie ups the difficulty just a bit.
Another likely scenario is that once in possession of the Blade of Crota, players will have to complete a second objective to finish the Public Event. For example, the moon Public Event seems to involve stopping a ritual, which could be a new version of the ‘Extraction Crews’ event for The Dark Below.
With only a week left until The Dark Below finally hits, Bungie is seemingly making their last minute tweaks behind the scenes. On Monday, they unleashed a pretty substantial new update – one that apparently included more than they were even willing to let on – and we wouldn’t be surprised to see one more before Tuesday.
Obviously, the focus with the DLC will be on the new Strikes, story missions, and the Crota’s End raid, but there’s plenty of free content – like these Public Events – included in the package as well. We’ll have our first thoughts on the expansion as soon as possible.
What do you make of the Blade of Crota’s appearance in Destiny? Is it just a new random gameplay element or is it part of a new Public Event?
Destiny: The Dark Below releases December 9, 2014 for PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One.
