New Halo Wars teaser hints at sequel, probably a big ol’ hoax

A new Halo Wars teaser website very strongly indicates that a Halo Wars 2 announcement is forthcoming, but ought to be taken with a big ol’ grain of salt.

The website is, at present, pretty barren, containing only a countdown timer that will conclude in a little over a month, at 12 a.m. on December 17. However, if you click on the gratuitous hashtag link below that, the one that reads “#SPIRITOFFIRE,” it pops open a new window with a pre-written Twitter message that includes the hashtag “#HaloWars2” (am I being redundant saying “hashtag” and using a hashtag there? I don’t know why this is still a thing).

However, SegmentNext points out that Halo Waypoint is hosted on Microsoft serves, which makes obvious sense, but that The Halo Wars website is run off Bluehost, a third-party hosting service. So unless Microsoft thought to outsource the website’s webhosting service to, I don’t know, throw Internet sleuths off, it seems likely that this is just another in a long line of fake websites and duplicitous trademarks created by fans to inevitably dash the hopes of other fans. People are great. A cursory search for Halo Wars 2 on the United States Patent and Trademark Office website turns up a whole lot of nothing.

In Halo lore, the UNSC Spirit of Fire is a colony ship whose AI, Serina, served as the player’s advisor in the original Halo Wars, the RTS spinoff from Ensemble Studios and Robot Entertainment that launched in 2009 and was, largely, met with positive reviews.
