Dataspelsbranschen, a Swedish organization that represents the videogame industry in the public eye, wants to reward developers that promote gender quality in games.
According to manager Anton Albiin, speaking to the Swedish news outlet The Local, the Swedish government awarded Dataspelsbranschen a 272,000 kronor ($36,672) grant to fund these promotion. The company is still exploring methods, but one idea that’s come up is to apply labels to games that succeed at,s ay, the Bechdel test. Or to give developers certification for marketing use.
“I do not know of any other project int he world asking this question,” manager Anton Albiin told The Local,” and of course we want Sweden to be a beacon in this area.
“Of course games can be about fantasy, but they can be so much more than this. They can also be a form of cultural expression—reflecting society or the society we are hoping for. Games can help us to create more diverse workplaces and can even change the way we think about things.”
